All of the music on this page is performed with improvisation that embraces experimentation and chance occurrence. Most selections here are raw works in that were conceived as they were performed. The format and degree of reach beyond musical norm varies with each improvisation. As experimental improvisation based on existing musical resources develops, it can evolve beyond it’s point of origin in meaningful ways.
When one improvises to develop new songs or to play freely inside an existing song, they are relying on their training, spontaneity, desire, and adrenaline among other elements. When playing with others, the joint musical conversation can build new approaches and textures for the ensemble, and can also develop each individual’s musical vocabulary. You don’t need a musical instrument to improvise, you simply release the voice of your soul from convention, allowing it to explore itself and the vast universe around it, in the present.
Most of my songs originate with improvisation. As with my Urban Tumble album, songs started with solo improvisation that yielded enough material to call out for the rest. The songs were then shaped for presentation. Sometimes music need not be shaped after being “found” during improvisation. It's possible that the raw data itself can become the most complete and authentic musical statement to be made.
